Platform 5 Poetry Competition Rules

Send your Platform 5 Haiku to

  • It must be in English.

  • It must not have been published before or submitted to another competition.

  • It should comply as closely as possible to the 5-7-5 haiku structure where the entire poem consists of just three lines, with 17 syllables in total :-

    • The first line is 5 syllables

    • The second line is 7 syllables

    • The third line is 5 syllables

  • Your poem should contain no swear words, and should be suitable for a mixed audience.

  • Your submission must be on the theme of the Hidden rivers of the Sheaf and Porter.

  • Any poem not conforming to these guidelines will be scored lower.

Data and copyright

  • Worldwide copyright for the poem will remain with the author but all entrants must give permission as the author of the submitted haiku for the Sheaf and Porter Rivers Trust to hold, process and display the work on our stainless steel plaques, our website, social media accounts and in other Trust media in relation to this competition. This may include any future publications by the Trust arising from this competition. You will always be credited alongside your poem, if chosen.

  • The Sheaf and Porter Rivers Trust may contact you only in relation to your poem and your data will not be used for any other purpose.

Eligibility and submission

  • The entries are grouped in ages 0 to 11 years, 12 to 17 years and 18 years and upwards.  You must state your age with your entry.

  • The competition is free and open to anyone.

  • You may submit up to three haikus per person.

  • Entries must be received by 12 noon on Tuesday 4th May 2021.

  • You must submit your entry by email to which will be open until the deadline. Please ensure you submit your entry in good time and preferably not on the last day. Please note that the Sheaf and Porter Rivers Trust can make no allowances for any technical issues which prevent or delay submission e.g. internet problems, and you are encouraged to submit your entry in good time. 

  • We regret that postal entries cannot be accepted.

Presenting your poem

  • Please send your haikus to

  • The haiku must be clearly typed in black with a ‘normal’ font such as Arial.

  • You must include your full name and age with your entry as well as your email address.


  • One winning haiku from each age category will be decided by a local celebrity poet and engraved on our stainless steel plaques and published on our social media pages.


The Judges’ decision is final in all matters. Judges and organisers will not enter into any correspondence/discussion with any entrant.

Any poems not conforming to the above rules and specifications will not be accepted.
